Designed by Makoto Shirahama & Associates, Rock House is a private residence in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, overlooking the Suo Sea.

The house occupies a hillside site scattered with large boulders and timber collected over several decades by the client's father. Rather than removing these materials, the architect incorporated them into the design, using the boulders to support an extended terrace and the timber throughout the building.

The residence stretches horizontally across the site, with its rooms oriented toward views of Majima, a small island offshore. Terraces, a reflecting pool, and expansive glazing create a gradual transition between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape.

Rock Houseは、白浜誠建築設計事務所の設計による、福岡県北九州市の周防灘を望む高台に建つ個人住宅です。

敷地には、建主の父親が数十年にわたって集めた巨石や木材が残されていました。建築家はこれらを取り除くのではなく、巨石を張り出したテラスの支持構造に、木材を建物の内外装に取り入れ、設計に生かしています。

建物は敷地に沿って水平方向に長く伸び、各室から沖合に浮かぶ間島を望めるよう構成されています。テラスや水盤、大きな開口部によって、室内空間から周囲の自然へと緩やかにつながる住環境がつくられています。
