Set along the Ōi River in Arashiyama, Hoshinoya Kyoto occupies a century-old former ryokan renovated and adapted by architect Rie Azuma of Azuma Architect & Associates.

The project retains the character and lightness of traditional Japanese timber architecture while introducing contemporary elements throughout the guest rooms and shared spaces. Kyoto craft traditions, including karakami paper and traditional plasterwork, are incorporated into the interiors, connecting the architecture to the material culture of the city.
